YouTube thumbnail size and specs
YouTube has one recommended thumbnail size and a handful of hard rules. Get these wrong and the upload is either rejected or quietly rescaled, which softens your text.

Watch the 2 MB limit. A photo-heavy design saved as PNG can easily land at 3–4 MB and YouTube will refuse it. Export as JPG instead — the editor shows your file size before you download. If it's still too large, run it through the Image Compressor.
How to make a YouTube thumbnail
- Upload a background. Any photo works — it's scaled to fill the frame without distortion, and you can zoom and drag to crop it.
- Add your text. Three to five words is the ceiling. It has to be readable at the size of a phone thumbnail, roughly the width of a postage stamp.
- Set size and colour. The black outline keeps text legible over any background, which is why almost every high-performing thumbnail uses one.
- Position it. Drag the text clear of the bottom-right corner — YouTube's duration badge sits there and will cover anything underneath.
- Export. JPG for photo backgrounds, PNG for flat colour and sharp graphics.
What tends to get clicked
- One idea per thumbnail. If a viewer needs two seconds to parse it, they've already scrolled.
- Faces with clear expressions. Not a neutral face — surprise, delight, alarm. The emotion is the hook.
- High contrast. Light text on a dark area, or the reverse. Mid-tone on mid-tone disappears at small sizes.
- Don't repeat the title. The thumbnail and title should say different things that add up to one idea, not the same thing twice.
- Test at actual size. Shrink your design to about 210 pixels wide. If the text is unreadable there, it's unreadable in the feed.
